NEW JERSEY E-BIKE LAWS

ARE CHANINGIN 2026!


New Jersey’s new law (S4834) now mandates licenses, registration, and insurance for e-bike owners before July 19th 2026. We’re working hard to keep our community informed and advocate for fair riding laws. As of right now, e-bike riders will need the following:


  • Riders 17+: Need a basic Driver's License.
  • Riders 15-16: Need a special Motorized Bicycle Permit
  • MVC Registration: Registration Fees waived for the 1st year
  • Liability Insurance: ALL e-bikes REGARDLESS of power or top speed
  • DOT-Approved Helmet
  • No online sales of e-bikes in New Jersey for 1 year
  • E-bike modification kits are now illegal
